I make a series of simple and modern moon jars, whose size varies from 300g to 6 kg in terms of clay used. This very unique one-of-the-kind collective vase is made with 3kg high-quality stoneware, hand thrown on the potter’s wheel to have a moon-like round shape and porcelean slip applied while it is still wet so that large crystals will grow on the surface. The crystalline glaze of mine used is named Katsura after Cercidiphyllum japonicum, commonly known as Katsura tree, which has leaves with a bronze tint in spring, turning yellow, pink and orange in autumn, when gives off a burnt sugar fragrance. The crystalline glaze is hand blended using high-quality raw materials purchased from Germany, England, and Denmark. The oxidization firing schedule specially designed for this glaze takes 2 full days to finish: the temperature is increased to the top temperature of 1280 celsius as fast as possible so that the glaze melts and runs on the clay surface so that crystal-forming molecules meet together to form “crystal seeds,” then the kiln temperature is lowered to temperatures where crystals can grow larger. In order to make halo effects the temperatures must be controlled up and down. Larger the crystals, the longer it takes to fire. This process is very stressful even for my well-insulated high-quality German kiln, requiring me to change heating elements very often. Generally, successful firing rate is very low for crystalline glaze and this vase is one of the rare success cases. I hope to find a home for this vase who can appreciate this survivor of many steps involved in production.
